Important Message Regarding YouTube

Important Message Regarding YouTube

 Dear Parents/Guardians

Please be vigilant in monitoring your child’s use of YouTube. There have been reports of some inappropriate content being infiltrated into YouTube videos that are meant for kids and has apparently been promoting suicide and other dangerous activities.

According to numerous reports, children have been watching Peppa Pig and Fortnite videos that then feature a female sculpture instructing viewers to self-harm or perform other dangerous stunts. These video clips are appearing on many social media sites and YouTube (including Kids YouTube). One of the videos starts innocently, like the start of a Peppa Pig episode for example, but quickly turn into an altered version with violence and offensive language. Examples of some of the things being asked are to turn the gas on or to find and take tablets.

Parents not closely monitoring what their children are watching could easily miss the message because it quickly returns to what looks like a regular video. It is important to be vigilant in monitoring what your children watch. That way you can report inappropriate content to social media platforms such as YouTube, so it can be taken down. Here is where you click to report inappropriate content:

It is within the three dots (…) that appear on the bottom right side of the video. Once reported, it takes YouTube at least 24 hours to remove the video.

Further resources to help parents in educating themselves about ways to encourage safe online practices can be found on the website of the eSafety Commissioner:

https://www.esafety.gov.au/

The Internet is a valuable resource for students but also a very vast and unmonitored domain. It is important to have regular discussions with children on how to be safe online accompanied with active supervision of their online activity.

Please feel free to contact the school if you have any further questions. Thank you.
